Op-ed: Keep housing affordable in Chaffee County

May 14, 2026

Stricter standards often equate to steeper prices – especially in Chaffee County. Next week, county officials have the chance to remain committed to affordable housing options for local residents. They are considering a new “electric-preferred” building code that goes beyond what the state of Colorado requires and would create stricter local standards than those used elsewhere in the state. These strict codes would stretch the wallets of many Coloradans.

The new codes would come with higher costs. Many homeowners rely on natural gas for space and water heating for the sake of lower annual energy bills in the colder Colorado climate. Approximately 70% of Colorado households depend upon natural gas for heating. The proposed code would make natural gas homes more expensive to build and renovate, by requiring stricter emission standards than those applied to all electric homes. These cost increases would happen despite real challenges of an all-electric home’s affordability, reliability, energy performance and total emissions calculation.

Housing, building depend on natural gas in Colorado

February 25, 2026

Across Colorado, the organizations and industries that develop, sell, and manage homes and commercial buildings want pragmatic energy policies and a strong future. However, recent moves to speed up electrification mandates under the state’s Clean Heat Plan may miss an important reality: energy policy and housing affordability are connected.

As decision-makers move quickly to limit access to natural gas, it is important to realize the costs do not vanish. Instead, the burden falls on Colorado’s homeowners, renters, and building owners and managers in a time where the state continues to grapple with housing and affordability challenges. With a statewide median household income of $95,470, as reported in Census data for Colorado, many households have little room to absorb higher housing and energy costs.

Colorado’s energy codes ignore affordability

June 17, 2025

Progress should not come at the expense of affordability. As Colorado moves toward a lower-carbon future, families and businesses deserve energy options that are reliable, cost-effective, and reflect their needs, not a one-size-fits-all approach. Choice and balance should guide this transition, not rising bills and reduced options.

As organizations working to meet Colorado’s growing housing and economic development needs, we see firsthand how rising construction costs and added building requirements are making it harder to deliver buildings and homes that small businesses and working families can afford. The housing affordability crisis is getting worse, and we must implement policies that support Coloradans working to make ends meet.

Natural gas essential to Colorado’s affordable energy future | OPINION

April 24, 2025

In Colorado, energy is more than a convenience, it’s a necessity. With nearly 40% of Coloradans facing financial hardship, we need an affordable and reliable energy source to keep us warm in the winter and to help us cook a hot meal after a long day. Natural gas is that source, meeting the needs of our neighbors and local business, fueling us in the present and driving us to a lower carbon future.

Coloradans want energy options, not mandates | OPINION

March 13, 2025

In the land of the free, Coloradans are losing their ability to choose the energy that aligns with their needs. Today, a mix of energy sources heat and cool homes across the state, including natural gas, electricity and renewable energy from wind and solar. However, there are policy discussions happening amongst Colorado’s decision makers that challenge the very notion Coloradans have a right to choose the energy they need to reliably and affordably run their homes and businesses. There are proposals that aim to limit the use of natural gas in favor of mandated electrification — meaning forcing Coloradans to replace natural gas with electricity as the exclusive energy source for our homes, buildings and appliances. This government-mandated shift would undermine Coloradans’ right to choose, compromise affordability and eliminate natural gas as a reliable source in the state’s energy mix.
