What Coloradans Want: Energy Choice, Affordability, and Reliability

In December 2024, Coloradans for Energy Access conducted public opinion research to gauge how Coloradans feel about natural gas. Key findings from the research revealed:

  • Coloradans prefer having access to natural gas over all-electric.
  • Coloradans want the choice to use natural gas in their home rather than mandates forcing them to use only electric.
  • The majority oppose forced electrification and support having a choice.

Coloradans are focused on:

  • Reliability – A power source they can count on.

  • Choice – The freedom to pick what works best for their home and family.

  • Affordability – Keeping energy costs low is a priority.

Natural Gas Powers Colorado Homes

Natural gas is a reliable and affordable energy source Coloradans depend on for cooking, heating, and everyday living.

Given the choice of a home with all-electric appliances and one that includes natural gas for heating, cooking, and other appliances, a 64% majority of Coloradans would choose natural gas. Even among those currently using electricity to cook, 45% would switch to gas if given the choice.

Why Natural Gas?

Reliability was the No. 1 reason Coloradans prefer natural gas in their home or business. In fact, the top three performers—totaling 80% of responses—all center around marketable attributes of natural gas and why it is a better choice compared to all-electric.

  • Second-Leading Factor: Better for heating/cooking
  • Third-Highest Factor: More affordable

Colorado Residents Want to Keep Their Energy Options Open

When it comes to future energy policies, most Coloradans reject mandates that take away their choices:

  • More than six-in-ten would pick natural gas over all-electric home if given the choice.
  • Among those respondents, 42% prefer natural gas primarily because it is “a more reliable energy source that is always available with the fewest interruptions.”
  • 78% oppose changes to state law that would prohibit their ability to choose the energy source they use in their home or business.

Protecting Affordable Energy for Colorado is Essential

With the cost of living in Colorado on the rise, affordable energy is more important than ever. When asked further about energy sources to power their homes, Coloradans overwhelmingly oppose laws that would take away their choice:

  • Seven in ten Coloradans stated that they would oppose a change to state law that would require new constructed homes, remodeled homes, and apartments to be all electric.
  • Nearly 80% oppose a new law requiring homeowners to replace their existing natural gas appliances with electric appliances. Coloradans have spoken loud and clear, they want to maintain the ability to install natural gas appliances at home.
  • When it comes to cooking, regardless of what appliance is currently used at home, 59% of Coloradans prefer to cook with natural gas.

Natural Gas is Essential to Colorado’s Economy

In addition to providing affordable energy, the natural gas industry provides over 135,000 Colorado jobs and powers our economy. This work is essential to Colorado and helps keep energy costs low for families and businesses.

Coloradans Have Spoken

At the end of the day, Coloradans want energy choice. They know that affordable, reliable natural gas is a key energy source to keeping their homes warm, their businesses running, and their budgets in check. Natural gas helps provide these energy needs.
