Natural gas is relied on in homes and businesses across Colorado to keep energy costs low and help meet emissions reductions goals.

Colorado must maintain affordability while working to reduce energy emissions. Natural gas is the most cost-effective means for cooking, heating homes, and powering businesses.

Technological advances to improve energy efficiency in commercial and home appliances along with developments like renewable natural gas have enabled Colorado natural gas systems to power the state more effectively. These technologies have significantly lowered methane and CO2 emissions without requiring costly equipment upgrades, helping the state meet its reduction goals.

Natural gas is meeting the energy demands of 1.8 million households and 150,000 businesses in Colorado while lowering emissions, saving energy, and reducing costs. Access to reliable, affordable energy is foundational to economic development and job growth.

A study from GTI finds that “A mid-efficiency case electric heat pump results in a 139% increase in annual consumer energy costs ($1.25 billion/year) and annual total costs (energy bills and annualized capital) totaling $1.66 billion/year. Annual total cost increases average $1,083/homeowner.”

The National Bureau of Economic Research and Lucas Davis, a professor at UC Berkley’s Haas Institute, found that the “framework used to calculate the economic cost of an electrification mandate for new homes. Households in warm states are close to indifferent between electric and natural gas heating, so would be made worse off by less than $500 annually. Households in cold states, however, tend to strongly prefer natural gas so would be made worse off by $3000+ annually.”
